Today a great American author passed. Maya Angelou (April 4, 1928 – May 28, 2014) was an American author and poet. She was best known for her series of seven autobiographies; the first, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (an international bestseller and nominated for a National Book Award in 1970), tells of her life up to the age of seventeen, and brought her international recognition and acclaim. She was active in the Civil Rights movement, and worked with Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X. In 1993, Angelou recited her poem On the Pulse of Morning at President Bill Clintons inauguration, the first poet to make an inaugural recitation since Robert Frost at John F. Kennedy s inauguration in 1961. CNN stated, Angelous legacy is twofold. She leaves behind a body of important artistic work that influenced several generations. But the 86-year-old was praised by those who knew her as a good person, a woman who pushed for justice and education and equality. Today we remember this amazing author who gave her life to the rights for others, and spreading her thoughts & creativity through her words.
