Today, along with many other students, Miniya is at home because a parent called in a threat of Columbine-like violence to her high school. Last night she and her friends were all over FB and emails and cell phones, asking who would be going to school; but mostly asking each other not to. She prayed extra-hard and extra-long because there were so many friends she wanted God to protect. A PARENT called in a threat of Columbine-like violence. A public thank you to Principal Bill Atterberry and Lodi USD for their prompt action in notifying everyone and keeping us up to date, both last night and this morning. And an additional thank you to Stockton PD for their increased presence today, even as theres likely a decreased presence of students. Because A PARENT called in a threat of Columbine-like violence. Think todays students lack critical thinking skills? Listen in the next time your child is having conversations with friends about school attendance being a possible life or death decision. Watch Civics, Philosophy, Current Events and Sociology get real. Watch them do complex urban math equations as they factor statistics, probabilities, ratios of cops to safety, and try to solve for x when x is A PARENT calling in a threat of Columbine-like violence. I cant even wrap my mind around the irony of communities and organizations in my city struggling so valiantly and barely making glacial progress at increasing basic parental involvement with their childrens education. Yet because of some real or perceived slight A PARENT is quick to reach for a phone to threaten harm to the innocent. As a mom, this is a reminder for me and Aaron to continue to have as many difficult dialogues as we need to with our children. Well always reserve the right to divert or dilute a question, but all questions get answers. And we all have to keep on that grind that encourages, empowers, challenges and guides as best we possibly can. We all have to raise our game, because when PARENTS are calling in threats of Columbine-like violence, its time to quit playin.
