Today, as long as theres one person who remembers you it isnt over. Jan. 10, 1921-Nov. 14, 2014 Charlo, MT Del Palmer, 93, passed away quietly at his home in the shade of his beautiful willow trees surrounded by the things he cherished most; his family and the land. Del was the patriarch of our family, the family Palmer. I didnt just love Del Palmer, I adored him. I adored his stories, his love of family and friends, his loyalty, his honesty, his generosity, his love of history, his role as the keeper of the land, and yes, even his awful jokes. I adored him. I admired his strength. His ride on the immigrant train during the Depression. His ride with his Dad on a bus from Charlo, Montana, to Carnation, Washington, to buy what would be the start of their dairy farm. His two year struggle to walk after the farm accident that crushed his legs. His climb up the Mission Range at age 86. Hed just had knee replacement surgery and when asked why he did it he answered, Because I finally could. His strength in the face of every parents nightmare. The image of him shortly after his stroke trying to attach his oxygen bottle to the four-wheeler so he could ride around the property. I admired his strength. I will miss him. I will miss our legal technical conversations regarding Indian Law. I will miss the yearly pheasant hunt with its invitation to local law enforcement and fish and game. Those were the days. I will miss his encyclopedic mind in all things pertaining to the family. I will miss his patience in always making time for me and all those family history questions. I will miss his letters. Those letters that were like having a conversation with him. I will miss him. It isnt over.
