Today, at the age of 95, Edward Brooke died. He was a Massachusetts Republican. He was the first black to serve as a states Attorney General. Subsequently, he served in the U.S. Senate from 1967-1979, thereby becoming the first black to sit in that branch since Reconstruction. During his lifetime, Brooke built a reputation that was bigger and nobler than the confines of the public offices that he held. He showed courage, stood on principle, and fought for de facto equality. May he rest in peace.
