Today in history On Nov. 13, 1940, the Willys Overland Co. submitted its Jeep prototype to the U.S. Army - by 1945, 600,000 military Jeeps had been made, and Walt Disneys Fantasia premiered. In 1941, during World War II, the U.S. amended the Neutrality Act of 1935 to allow American merchant ships access to war zones. In 1956, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Alabamas segregation laws were illegal. In 1971, the U.S. Mariner 9 became the first spacecraft to orbit Mars. In 1979, the NBAs Darryl Dawkins broke his first backboard, shattering the glass during a game. In 1982, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial was dedicated in Washington, D.C.
