Today is the World Humanitarian Day is a very special day for me - TopicsExpress

Today is the World Humanitarian Day is a very special day for me as it is related to the anniversary of the 2003 bombing of the UN headquarters in Baghdad and killing 22 humanitarians’ aid workers. Baghdad was my workstation at that time. In March of the same year I was captured with three fellow humanitarian workers and thrown in the famous Abu Ghraib prison and badly tortured by the Iraqi regime at that time. It was the time to rethink about my mission and whether I had to quit as my life was at risk. My answer was - and remains - a strong No and I have to continue saving lives, especially that our lives as aid workers is not more valuable than the lives of the people that we are trying to save, so I am here now. On this occasion, I found that helping people who are desperate, due to disaster and calamities, who have lost everything, particular if you have nothing in common with (in terms of religion, nationality, background etc) besides being a human being, is a very rewarding feeling. People affected by disaster have the right to receive humanitarian assistance and equally aid workers have the right to offer humanitarian assistance and protect their fellow human. youtube/watch?utm_campaign=World_Humanitarian_Day_is_nearly_here%21&utm_medium=Email&utm_source=SocialToaster&v=4hl21dfwvaE
