Tucked away in the heart of the Historical Center, this peculiar market, built in 1934 by architect Antonio Muñoz combines baroque styles you, Belle Époque, Art Nouveau and Art Deco, has a nursery and an auditorium, and it’s named after the president of the Rpublic Abelardo L. Rodriguez. It could be any market, however the walls are decorated with murals done under the supervision of Diego Rivera and portraying themes such as exploitation of workers, peasants and miners, the struggle against Nazism and fascism and racial discrimination. Its creators were talented Mexicans, Americans and Japanese who approached the art to the people through the murals found at the main entrances, lobbies, courtyards and corridors of the market.
