Today l wish to give the Radiology Department of Red Cross Childrens Hospital a HUGE shout out for an initiative taken and driven by one of my wifes colleagues, Esme Petersen and endorsed and assisted by a few of the other colleagues in the department.The project in a nutshell was for each staff member to adopt a child from 2 x Grade R classes at Zeekoe Primary School.The vision was to provide a box which would contain a toy,a clothing outfit.underwear,shoes,facecloth,soap,toothbrush and toothpaste.The Grade R Teachers were so kind as to provide the names,ages and sizes of each child.In addition to this each child got a party pack and a cupcake as well.I cannot express in words what privilege and a honor it was to accompany the Staff to the school to hand out all these gifts.All the kids were waiting in the school hall which l need to describe to you as just a Huge Room with absolutely nothing in it except plastic chairs.As we all stepped into the hall,the expressions on the faces of the Kids simply had my Heart torn apart.There were looks of complete anxiety,others displayed immense fear,some could not fathom what was taking place but everybody knew what the presence of Father Christmas meant.All that they needed to internalize is what it meant for them right at that moment.Man,we don;t know Poverty nor do we even have the slightest idea what it means to not even have the basics in life.I literally hung my head in shame just thinking about what l complain and moan about each and every day and here l was placed in an environment where something this small was making such a huge and credible impact in the lives of these little ones.As Father Christmas (who incidentally is the IT Pax Manager) started calling out their names to collect the gifts,party pack and cupcake - My Gosh,what a sight it was to behold - These kids could not believe that what they were holding in their hands,in fact belonged to them now,They could not even unwrap their gifts.As we all assisted them to get to the contents - the Joy and Delight on their faces were absolutely indescribable.After each kid started to settle down and absorb what had taken place, The Principal thanked the Radiology Department and its Staff - His remark was that the department gave something worth far more than what any amount of money could purchase,they gave their entire heart and soul to these kids today.He was in Awe of the Generosity and Compassion shown to these grade Rs today.I want to Salute All the Radiologists.Radiographers,Clerical Staff and Radiology Nursing Staff and the Relevant Support Staff for an Initiative well support and mission Accomplished.God Bless you all.
