Today started the first 10 days of the Islamic calendar month of Dhul-Hijjah. The Prophet Muhammad said: ما من أيام أعظم عند الله ولا أحب إلى الله العمل فيهن من أيام العشر فأكثروا فيهن من التسبيح والتحميد والتهليل والتكبير. “There are no other days as great as these to God nor are there any other days wherein good deeds are as beloved to God as in these 10 days. So increase therein declaring Gods glory, declaring Gods praise, declaring Gods Oneness, and declaring Gods greatness. [Reported by at-Tabarāni] Ibn Hajar al-`Asqalāni has said: والذي يظهر أن السبب في امتياز عشر ذي الحجة لمكان اجتماع أمهات العبادة فيه، وهي الصلاة والصيام والصدقة والحج، ولا يتأتى ذلك في غيره. “The preponderant reason for the ten days of Dhul-Hijjah being distinguished is due to the assembly of the mothers of all acts of worship in this period. These are prayer, fasting, charity, and pilgrimage. In no other period do these deeds combine.” So do whatever you can in these days. Everyone always prays more, fasts more and donates —usually online through PayPal— more in these days. Thats all good, but what I want you all to do differently in regards to charity specifically is to get out and touch some hearts. Walk up to people and find out how theyre feeling. See if they need anything. Maybe someone just needs a warm and caring smile. The Prophet Muhammad said even a smile is charity. Lord knows there have been days when I really needed a smile more than anything. I needed someone to care. But if you REALLY want to be a game changer, go to the poor and homeless and see what they need that you can provide. Visit your nearest cancer center and see if any of the children or elderly (or anyone else, for that matter) wouldnt mind a visit from a stranger. For Gods sake, DONT PREACH. Just show some love. Theres no better witnessing to the path of God and righteousness than your own walking the walk. I promise you that these 10 days will be like no other 10 days of Dhul-Hijjah before them.
