Today, the beautiful people of Mount Zion AME Church will celebrate two significant milestones in the life of our son, the Rev. Dr. Jahkimmo Smith. I too, am glad that God intervened, as I consider him to be one of lifes greatest gifts to us. When he came into our lives we were a young couple in ministry who had recently returned to the island after pastoring overseas. Not sure exactly how it all happened, but one day he was the kid from up the street who had joined the church who would never seem to go home. The next thing I know he is living in our house, eating all our food, (like all teenagers do) stealing our hearts, consuming our time, spending our money and calling us Mom and Dad. Little did we know at that time that I would never give birth biologically to a son of my own, but his presence in our lives has helped to fill what would have perhaps been an indescribable void. (Thanks Cammie and Frankie for sharing!!) It has been an amazing journey as we have watched him yield to the Potters touch. Our God is truly awesome! From HUGE gaps in his learning to an earned doctorate!! From struggling to put thoughts on paper to becoming one of our churches most gifted young preachers and writers!! From a kind of rough little boy trying to find his way in the world to a confident and caring pastor and a loving and protective husband to Lashonna!! To God be ALL the glory!! So let us come out this afternoon at 5pm at Mount Zion AME Church in Whale Bay Southampton to give thanks to God for his life and ministry. The preacher will be MY former Homiletics professor at the iTC, the Rev. Dr. Carolyn Knight, who would later teach HIM and become one of his greatest mentors. (I am amazed at how life intersects!!) She is an incredible, anointed vessel that will bring a message to truly inspire our hearts. Let us come in faith believing that his story along with the Word will touch lives and bring others into relationship with God! For it doth not yet appear... THE BEST IS TRULY YET TO COME!!
