Today, the fifth of Av, is the yahrzeit of the Holy ARI, Rabbi - TopicsExpress

Today, the fifth of Av, is the yahrzeit of the Holy ARI, Rabbi Isaac Luria Ashkenazi, perhaps the greatest kabbalist in the past half millennium. His work has been an inspiration for so many, and has enabled me to continually find a place in the cacophony of the Jewish tradition. R. Pinhas of Koretz was alleged to have said, “The Zohar kept me Jewish.” I think I can say that for the teachings of Luria. Below I link two works on the Ari, the important biography by Lawrence Fine and my book From Metaphysics to Midrash: Myth, History, and the Interpretation of Scripture in Lurianic Kabbalah. Like many others, I have lived inside Luria’s prodigious mind for many years. There are many other works of note in English, the important dissertation (Hebrew University) on Lurianic prayer by Menachem Kallus and the recent dissertation (Brandeis University) on gilgul by Zvi Ish-Shalom in particular. May his light shine and may we continually find sustenance in one of the most creative minds Judaism has ever produced. amazon/Physician-Soul-Healer-Cosmos-Kabbalistic/dp/0804748268/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1406917372&sr=1-1&keywords=lawrence+fine. amazon/Metaphysics-Midrash-Interpretation-Scripture-Literature/dp/0253350883/ref=sr_1_9?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1406917454&sr=1-9&keywords=Shaul+magid
