Today was week 3 of my infant massage sessions. Again it was a beautiful session where today we focused on the massage sequences for the chest and arms. It was great to see the mums asking for permission from their babies and then recognising the cues which their babies gave in return. Following the massage sequence we had a discussion time where talked about habits, and the age babies may form habits. This related to ideas about whether attending to our babies cries might lead to spoiling our baby, or whether allowing our babies to use dummies was something that may form a habit. Our consensus was that, regardless of the age of the babies present, if a baby wanted a dummy they would keep it in their mouth, if they didnt they would spit it out. The same with incessant crying. Sometimes babies are soothed with being attended to by their parents, and at other times they are not. So maybe then, these behaviours are not about habits, but about having a need met. We then shared in singing a beautiful Bengali lulaby which Vimala McClure (the founder of the International Association of Infant Massage) learnt while working in an orphanage in India. It has almost become an anthem for the association ... Ami Tomake ... take a listen ... it really does help soothe an upset baby ... we achieved a magical peaceful moment by just singing this to our babies ...
