Today we remember Fourth Corporal Peter A. Hertzberger, Company B, 38th Battalion Virginia Light Artillery. Peter A. Hertzberger was born in Germany in 1841, the son of Adam and Anna Elizabeth Hertzberger. While it’s unclear when or how he came to Richmond, Virginia, Hartsberger (Hertzberger) enlisted as a Private in Captain Henry C. Cabell’s Company (Richmond Fayette Artillery), Virginia Light Artillery on 25 April 1861. The company successively became Captain M.C. Macon’s Company and Company I, First Virginia Artillery. In June of 1863 it became Company B, 38th Battalion (Read’s) Virginia Light Artillery. On 1 June 1864 Hartsberger (Hertzberger) was promoted to 8th Corporal, and successively to 6th and 4th Corporal. 4th Corporal Peter A. Hertzberger was buried in Shockoe Hill Cemetery on 27 December 1864, the interment book entry reading, “Peter A. Hartsberger, 24 yrs., Sudden Death.” The following day the notice of his death appeared in the Daily Dispatch: Suddenly, on the 27th instant, at the residence of F. Laube, corner Third and Broad streets, Peter A. Hartzberger, a member of the Richmond Fayette Artillery, in the twenty-fourth year of his age. His funeral will take place this morning at 11oclock from the above residence. His relations and friends are respectfully invited to attend. The members of the company now in Richmond are respectfully invited to attend also. A painter by trade, Hartsberger (Hertzberger) was sick on furlough in Richmond at the time of his death. His grave remains unmarked.
