Todays Devotion Topic: The Shepherds Rod (Part 1) Text: Psalm 23:4 (NIV) Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. Amen We are embarking on a 3-day study of one of the famous texts of the Psalmist, with a focus on the shepherds rod. A rod is a short piece of a sapling with a club head on the end. The rod, though not commonly used by most shepherds, plays a very significant role in shepherding. It plays 3 major roles, and we shall critically examine each within this 3 day peroid of studies to help us better appreciate how God, our good shepherd uses the rod on us and for us. 1. The rod gives protection to the sheep against preys 2. It gives direction and serves as a disciplinary tool. 3. It is used to search hidden things in the sheeps wool. We shall today look into the first use; protecting the sheep. The rod is a weapon used by shepherds to protect the sheep from danger. The shepherd does that by skillfully tossing the rod to keep preys like wolves, cobra, lions etc. from attacking the flock. Should a stubborn predator attack, the Rod is used to hit it real hard until it drags its wounded self away. The rod is also used to hit the bushes and grass to detect any possible predator ambush. Jesus, our good shepherd protects and keeps us safe by His Mighty rod. This rod is not made of wood, iron, plastic or any modern material, No! It is made of POWER & DIVINE MIGHT (for all power & all might belongs to our God). It reaches every corner of the grazing field and destroys every evil scheme set against His precious sheep even before the enemy attacks. You know, there is so much evil and chaos in this world. Many snakes, Bears, Lions and Foxes are out there to consume the flock of Christ. But they have been wounded each time they tried; they could not escape the reach of the Masters rod. The sheep is comforted at the sight of the Sherperds rod because they know that NO HARM can ever befall them. Confident about this, Apostle Paul asks the church in Rome rhetorically If Christ be for us, who can be against us? (Rom 8:31). Meditate on this word and decide to make Gods presence your dwelling place. Begin to pray now. Come against any weapon that has been fashioned against you. It shall not prosper in Jesus name! We shall continue tomorrow God willing with the second use of the shepherds rod. (yonghana.org; Like our fbk pg Y Outreach Network)
