Todays Feature Commonwealth Country is British Virgin Islands POPULATION: 25,367. CAPITAL CITY: ROAD TOWN The British Virgin Islands is a British Overseas Territory. It lies roughly mid-way between Puerto Rico and the northern most of the Leeward Islands group in the Caribbean. This is an archipelago of four large and 32 smaller islands, 16 of which are inhabited. Tortola is the largest island. Rain falls erratically, so the islanders can no longer rely on wells for their fresh water supply. Nearly all buildings have water catching equipment, and water is imported in barges. Tourism, financial services and business registration are important for the islands’ economy. The traditional music of the islands is fungi, a fusion of African and European music. Fungi is played on a wide range of instruments, many of which are homemade. The beat of the double bass is usually the base for a colourful mix of sounds and instruments. Children on the British Virgin Islands learn fungi, as it is part of their school curriculum. Fungi is also the name of a local dish. It’s a cornmeal and can be served plain, but the islanders like to fuse it with different ingredients including okra, onions and green peppers. With all that sea, it’s no wonder that sailing is one of the foremost sports! Calm waters and steady breezes give some of the best sailing conditions. Baseball, American football and basketball are popular sports. The British Virgin Islands made its debut at the Auckland 1990 Commonwealth Games, and has attended every edition of the Games since.
