Todays Meditation - Thur. Oct. 17 Heavenly Father, in you we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray you so to guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our life we may not forget you, but may remember that we are ever walking in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Devotion Psalm 18:1-20. I called upon the LORD in my distress and cried out to my God for help. A young man who often ridiculed his parents for believing in the power of prayer found himself in a difficult situation that changed his mind in an instant. In the midst of a hiking trip, he slipped at the edge of a cliff and frantically waved his arms in the air until he was able to grab on to a branch on the side of the cliff. He immediately cried out, “Thank you, Lord, for helping me.” When he looked down, there was still quite a ways to go, so he began to practice his newfound faith in prayer by shouting, “Lord, Lord, please help me!” A voice from heaven finally responded, “Son, if you really want to see me, you have to let go…” Then the young man called out, “Help! Are there any other suggestions out there?” Often when we pray with the psalms, we connect with the cry for help and the lament or anguish expressed. We make the connection because human experience has caused us to feel what the psalmist is expressing. Yet we must never forget that God does listen, even if we are not ready to accept the response we may receive in prayer. Ps 18:1-20 * 18:21-50; Jeremiah 38:1-13; 1 Corinthians 14:26-33a, 37-40; Matthew 10:34-42 Bible Verse for today Psalm 1:3 (NIV). He [the one who delights in and meditates upon the Law of the Lord] is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers....... Thoughts on This Verse... Some kinds of earthly delight can feed our hearts for a short time. However, when difficulties come, our hearts will wither in the drought of their false nourishment. On the other hand, delighting in the LORD and in his will for us provides us with ongoing and ever-fresh joy. Out of this God-seeking lifestyle come both short-term and long-term benefits as well as a resiliency that withstands lifes worst droughts.
