Todays Speakingtree- Times Of India The World Is Your Playground By Jaya Row A magnet attracts iron, not wood. But when iron and wood are tied together the combination is influenced by the magnet. However, the wood in the combination remains unaffected. You are a combination of matter and spirit. Body, mind and intellect make up matter. The world is like the powerful magnet that affects body, mind and intellect. It does not have the power to influence Atman, the spirit in you. You are atman; not body-mind-intellect. They are mere instruments through which you function. Since you do not know atman, you have totally identified with matter components in you, becoming body-mind-intellect. Hence the world teases and harasses you; it enslaves you. All you have to do is shift your identification to the real you, atman. Then you become master of the universe. All problems arise from ignorance of your real Self, resulting in wrong identification with body, mind and intellect. Thus the world torments you. However, the world by itself is toothless. Ignorant, you confer power to the world. So gain knowledge, understand your true nature then the world will become your playground. From the standpoint of atman, you will enjoy the world. You are unable to distinguish between matter and spirit. Vast portions of your potential and magnificence are inaccessible to you. You are limited by physical boundaries, emotional baggage and intellectual prejudices. Your obsession with body, mind and intellect make you subservient to the world. You, lord of the universe, are begging for crumbs from the world.Who are you? Are you the person you are now? Or the infant you were many years ago; or the child you were or the teenager you thought you were? They are all different. Yet you claim all these identities to be I the Self that is One. The very search for your real identity is enchanting, invigorating and energising. Hence Krishna is called manamohana and chittachora. He captivates you and steals your heart. You understand the futility of worldly pursuits and invest all your energies in the higher goal. The world then comes to you on a platter.Self-knowledge enables you to live life objectively. You perform your obligations in the world dispassionately yet wholeheartedly. You achieve excellence effortlessly. If you are a sportsperson, you break all records; as musician you uplift your audience; as businessman, you soar to the top. Yet your main pursuit remains search for Truth. Then the waves of challenges only kiss your feet and retreat. Nothing topples you, nothing affects you. You become free from sorrow and grief and attain happiness that is not dependent on the world.By your own small-mindedness you have shrunk. The slightest challenge appears to be insurmountable. Be aware that the world poses no real threat. It tests you because you have shrunk in stature. Regain your true nature to realise your full potential. The world will no longer threaten you.The Gita in chapter 13 separates matter and spirit. Matter is different in different beings but spirit is the same in all. Just as the sun gets reflected in different media, creating a variety of reflections, the atman functioning in different matter creates diversity of beings. The reflected sun loses its original nature and takes on properties that reflect different media. So too the reflected atman has lost its grandeur, restricted by matter. One who understands this has no value for images or their perceived limitations. To attain enlightenment, focus on the one atman.
