Todays missive is about PHRASAL VERBS. Ever hear of them? We use them constantly. A phrasal verb is usually a verb + a preposition, and they wreak havoc in the minds of English language learners everywhere. Consider the differences between give up, give in, and give out; think also of put down, put up, put back, put by, and put across. What about hold in, hold out, hold up, and hold on, or hang out and hang on? Worst of all, we often divide them, so its harder to FIGURE them OUT. These are, perhaps, the worst language tricks that we impose on our friends around the world, and on behalf of all English speakers, I apologize.
