Today’s guest quote is by Rob Bell, from What We Talk About When We Talk About God: “Here’s the twist, the mystery, the unexpected truth about admitting that takes us back to the counterintuitive power of gospel: When you come to the end of yourself, you are at that exact moment in the kind of place where you can fully experience the God who is for you. I was at dinner recently with a friend who is very clear about how religious she isnt. She was telling about her daughters recent health scare and how terrifying it had been for her as a mother and how all she could do was pray, even though she doesnt pray. Why do people who dont pray, pray when theyre terrified? I tell you about my friend sitting there at dinner sharing that story about praying because when we talk about the God who is for us, we first have to talk about our deep-down, intuitive awareness that we need help. I realize that this sort of talk is out of sync with many of the dominant voices that have been working on us for a number of years now, insisting that we are the answer to our problems, that there is no one else out there, and that if we dont fix things ourselves, there are no other options. While this sounds empowering and reasonable and free from all that primitive religious superstition, what we actually run into in the course of our everyday lives are endless struggles that (if were honest) we need help with if were going to survive, much less prevail, because on our own we know that we are powerless.”
