Tom Clancy and Anime Sale Underway on the PlayStation Store Tom Clancy and anime? There are two topics that I never thought would appear in the same headline, unless Tom Clancy secretly wrote an anime. That would be sweet. Anyway, both are having a sale on the PlayStation Store this week where you can pick up a few great games cheaply. The Tom Clancy sale is pretty straightforward. Everything with the author’s name must go, and there is no shortage of great games to choose from. The HD remakes of the original three Splinter Cell games are a great place to drop $3.75 each, and they are joined by later games from the series, Double Agent and Blacklist. Conviction did not make he cut as it was never released for the PlayStation 3. Those wanting more action should check out the first Rainbow Six: Vegas game and Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2. I fell out of favor with the non-Splinter Cell Tom Clancy games after Rainbow Six: Vegas 2, so I can’t speak for EndWar, further Ghost Recon entries, or the handheld games. Metacritic isn’t that kind, though. I’ve never played H.A.W.X., but I’ve heard it’s the most decent flight series in this post-Ace Combat world. Mamorukun The anime sale raises a few questions, though. Are these licensed anime games? Well, some of them are, but Sony has also gathered a few other quality games with an anime aesthetic. Of course, that counts for just about everything that gets released from Japan these days, but I’ll take any excuse for cheaper games. Am I right? This might not be too surprising, but the non-licensed games are the best of the bunch. In fact, the HD ports of Tales of Symphonia and original Devil May Cry trilogy are the best place to start considering they were released back when Japan dominated the gaming market. Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 FES also falls in line with that category. All three games did have animes based off of them. From there, fighting game fans should check out BlazBlu: Chrono Phantasma, Arc System Works’ gorgeous follow up to the Guilty Gear series. The game I plan on picking up is Mamoruken Curse!, a “bullet hell” shooter with a delightfully cheerful sense of atmosphere. It’s been a while since I’ve played a “cute ‘em up,” and I’ve heard fun things about this one. The Hakuoki games, based on an anime series, are also pretty interesting from what fans say about them. Text adventures are a hard sell on the consoles, making Stories of the Shinsengumi a hard sell for $19.59. The PSP game is selling for $5, but it’s an action game and not overly well received by critics either. It’s the kind of game where you have to be a fan, and that I am not. The other licensed games games extend to bad and mediocre recreations of your favorite shonen series: Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle, Saint Seya: Brave Soldier, Fist of the North Star: Ken’s Rage 2, Naruto Shippuden, and a whole host of One Piece games. These are the type of games that don’t do Japanese game development any favors in these dark days.
