Tomorrow is my anniversary. No not to my beautiful Queen, Christy- that was last month, marking our 25 year milestone 💏 And next month is my 25 year anniversary to Jesus. 25 years ago I believed The Lord loved me and forgave me and is preparing a home for me for all eternity! I am so thankful my wife introduced me to Him and I am overwhelmingly grateful that my Savior has made me fall more passionately in love with my wife than ever before! No it is not my Kroger anniversary. That is in November- marking 29 years this year. And if I make the milestone of 30 years will someone do me a favor and gift wrap me a noose and point me to the nearest tree- Just Kidding (or am I)- only those who work for the company know the true answer 🙈🙉🙊 Actually tomorrow is my ONE year anniversary with Cracker Barrel. I have officially survived 1⃣ year of working 2 jobs. It has been a blessing financially. My tips have bought a years worth of groceries, gas, paid some unexpected mishaps- flat tires, broken washers, sinks, toilets. Paid tons of medical bills, blessed us with eating out, movies, last years Comic-Con, dates with my gorgeous wife, fun with the kiddos and blessings to others at times. I am just so thankful that the $1,000s and $1,000s of dollars I have made in tips saved us on having to pay for all the things throughout the year out of our Kroger checks- so we could use them on all the main bills! The year at the Barrel has been exhausting but good. I do miss all the free time I used to have in life but it will just make retirement that much sweeter when I get there. Ive had a few mishaps along the way like the few things I wrote about in my last post and the time I dumped a bowl of gravy down a young ladies back and dumped a sprite all over a gentleman one night and a few minutes later dumped a water on his wife- Oh well, accidents happen. As a server you got to shake things off and move on. My experience over the last year has been amazing and fulfilling yet last night was genuinely the first night in a year that I actually thought of walking out of there. I worked 6pm to 8pm (first of all really boss a 2 hr shift) is it really worth coming in for? I had the same shift last Sunday and made $20. Anyway the last 2 nights I got about 4 hrs of sleep total. Zombies have more energy than me at this point. So I thought if I could get all my clean up duties done- maybe I will be home by 8:30 or so and get to bed earlier because my alarm went off at 4:30 this morning to go to work at Kroger. I swept the whole third dining room, emptied all the salt and pepper shakers in that dining room, cleaned all the tables and broke down and cleaned the juice machine and put it back together all by 8:15. I thought- Sweet! All I got to do is roll silverware. Do it fast- maybe I can get out by 8:45. The only problem was there was no clean silverware. Ugggghhh- so I went in the dish room and sorted 2 pans of silverware which took me awhile. Now most managers would go ahead and let you go if you sort instead of roll- not last night, the boss still wanted me to roll. So I rolled a pan and a half and we ran out of silverware again. All the servers were trying to get silverware rolled and get out of there. So I told the boss I sorted 2 pans and rolled 1 and 1/2. He told me to go sort some more. Ugggghh. Michelle and I sorted 4 more pans of silverware. Then guess what- I had permission to go home. Also it was about 10pm that night and we just closed for the day. My 2 hr shift turned into a 4 hr shift but keep in mind folks after 8pm- I was cut off the floor and was making $2.13 an hour for all those duties done the last 2 hrs I was there. Does that seem unfair to anyone but me? Last Sunday I made $20 in 2 hrs serving then still had to stay till 10pm to do cleaning duties. So my $10 an hour went down to $5 an hour + my $2.13 an hr wage- so I didnt even make minimum wage that night. Luckily last night my last table tipped me $20. So I made $40 for the night only serving 2 hrs and cleaning for 2 hrs. My point is it just isnt right that servers clean the whole front of a place, the whole back of a place and then have to roll 100 to 150 things of silverware for a company and get paid $2.13 an hr for all that labor. The law definitely needs to be changed. But anyway between being exhausted last night and not being able to get out at a decent hr- I so wanted to walk out the door last night! Be kind to your servers when you eat out- tip generously. To me this is just a part time job but to a lot of people it is their livelihood 😃
