Tonight, Catalyst (8pm, ABC1) has a story about Australian scientific efforts to protect honeybees from the threats decimating their colonies elsewhere in the world. Its particularly relevant for Hobart, where City Council by-laws regard wild honeybee hives as pests to be destroyed. The bees you see in your garden are just as likely to come from a wild colony than a managed hive - and thats what makes Australia different from other continents. We still have healthy populations of wild honeybees that pollinate our crops for free. In other countries, wild hives that arent managed by beekeepers are infested and killed by Varroa mites. Like Bill Harvey, I believe our Council should support the survival of honeybees, by encouraging backyard hives, and not treating bees that live wild and free as pests.
