Tonight, I watched a lovely little indie called Robot and Frank (2012). It stars Frank Langella as a former second story man, now in his decline, dealing with some health and memories issues. His son, played by James Marsden, is tired of making a 10 hr round trip journey to check on his fathers well being so he buys him a robot companion to do the job for him. Frank learns that the robot has no real concept of the law and he uses it to begin his criminal career anew. The futuristic world of next Tuesday barely rears its head in the movie which instead focuses on the relationship between the title characters. Its cute and funny and offers a twist to the usual Alzheimers story. Its a sweet movie that has a job to do and does it well. Peter Sarsgaard is the voice of the robot; Liv Tyler has a glorified cameo as Franks daughter; Susan Sarandon is the local librarian and love interest; and Jeremy Sisto appears as the sheriff. On the surface, its pretty cliche and I figured out one of the only twists fairly early in the film, however Langella is really good and the characters interaction make the movie. If youre just looking to relax and want to see a light, touching story, its worth your time. I rate this one a B+.
