Took Randys truck to go to town for errands...bank, coffee, UPS, - TopicsExpress

Took Randys truck to go to town for errands...bank, coffee, UPS, post office, and check on scrip at Sams.....left Wittmann and gas gauge said 114 miles to empty. Noticed while Id just been on the road a short time, it had jumped way down...it didnt make sense. Quickly forgot about it as I went about my business. Headed home, and thermometer on truck said 101 outside. Oh well, Ill be home soon and can put the poor horses in (usually they are in well before this time, during the heat of the day). It was after all 11 already and I should have been home by now. Driving about 15 min from my house I glanced down...how can this be? 35 miles to empty. Where did the gas all go??? So Im thinking Ill make it, not a problem when all of a sudden it starts to shake and I start slowing, slowing, slowing.....remembering Randy saying if it says it has gas, just ignore it...its not accurate! and thinking he is going to kill me! and no sooner did I cruise to a stop that I realized, I dont have my cell phone! No gas can! No water! and Im stopped somewhere between mile marker buzzard and javelina trail, 101 degrees and climbing. And wearing jeans and a long sleeve top, since I wasnt dressing this am for a jog home. What to do? cant call Randy...that would be suicide. Better walk to gas station. Crossed the four lane hwy and had to walk down in a ditch (probably a few snakes down there in the weeds??)...hopefully no passers by in cars are perverts who want to stop and kill me, poor helpless me, soon to be overcome by heatstroke. Not to worry, I thought, Ill just look nonchalant like any old person who takes a walk at midday in Arizona in 100 degree weather, miiles from civilization. Within a few minutes, a car stopped. Young couple in orange sports car. She yells to me and I can understand her, cars whizzin by...but I decide well, I best take the best offer Ill probably get...before I fall down and get eaten by buzzards. They were a nice young couple...drove me to gas station (opposite direction to where they were headed, so that was nice of them!)...I remembered I only had 3 dollars on me and a bank card (and Id just gone all the way to town to put money in bank, not to take it back out!!)..............how will I offer these people ten bucks? Will i say heres three dollars, you are so nice!?..................I borrowed a gas can from the store, filled it with ONE gallon (that is all it held), was told by a local sitting there that a diesel truck would probalby need two hours of work to get it started as when they run out, it isnt as easy to restart them, yadayada, and particularly if I only put one gallon in. But, what the heck. Worth a try. I let the young couple go when I saw a famiar face from Wittmann, a guy I see walking all the time. He offered to drive me home. I go fill up the gas can, and someone ELSE pulls by me and says we saw you walking and saw your truck, we would be happy to help! and that couple proceeds to take me back to the truck (I told the first walker guy never mind, not because I didnt trust him but because the other people were already outside with the motor running). THEY put the gas in, THEY started it up for me...and THEY run some kind of garage in Wittmann so they knew how to get it to start. (first crank and it didnt). They had offered to tow me if we didnt get it going but it did start eventually, hooray! Then they said we will follow you back to the gas station! and that is what they did. And SHE took the can back inside. Can you imagine? Was that good luck, sweet people, guardian angels, or what? So I tell the guy thanks, hug him, hug her, try to give him my three dollars apologizing for not having more, and saying I need your address so I can stop by and give you a twenty! And the guy goes no, this is my pay it forward! So anyone who heard from me a few days ago via email remembers I took an older woman home from the store, hauling her just purchased bookshelves as a favor?? I told her it was my pay it forward, not to worry. Life is good. Boy am I hot!!
