Top Ten things you may not yet know about the Texas Ta-Ta team at the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer (in spite of our last 716 posts about it): 1. Our team of eight women ranged in age from 25 to 63. The two walkers in their 60s were usually the two out front. A four year old insisted on joining us for bits and pieces but she was too young to be an official walker. 2. One of us couldnt finish on Sunday because she had been battling a case of walking pneumonia, walked anyway, and fainted on the floor of the Westin a couple hours after walking 26.2 miles. She signed up for next year again anyway. 3. Even though we all have different ages, sizes and paces, we all stopped together at every break, bathroom line and medic tent. We crossed the finish lines, together, hand in hand, both days. 4. The team was founded six years ago but only had two members the first year, so it couldnt be called an official team. In six Avon Walks, that means the Texas Ta-Tas have walked 235.8 miles in official events. That means thousands upon thousands of miles walked in training and preparation. 5. This year, the team raised more than $34k ($4k in donations and matching funds are still on their way in). Over the last six years, the amount is in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. 6. One of our team members (and we wont say who) loses toenails every single year, and has had surgery on her veins because of the damage done by the long miles. Shes signed up for next year, too. 7. For the last several years, at least one member of the team has flown in from another state. This year the farthest flown prize went to Shannon from Florida, with special mention to Marisa from Dallas. 8. Of the various ailments that did not stop us from walking, we can count: plantar fascitis, arthritis, multiple sprained ankles, walking pneumonia and scoliosis. One of us wasnt sure on the route this year if she had stepped on a nail or if a blood blister on the bottom of her foot had burst. She kinda hoped for the nail since it could have been pulled out. Dont let the pink visors fool you. Were warriors. 9. Friction can cause blisters in places nowhere near your feet. Dont ask. 10. In spite of the pain, the heat rash, the time spent, the sacrifices, the expenses and the exhaustion, every single one of us will be doing it again next year. We would love to add you to our sisterhood. It is every bit as hard as it sounds but it is about a hundred times that rewarding. Thanks for the support and tolerating the steady stream in your news feed. For those of you who are touched by breast cancer, we do it because we love you. And we will see you again next year.
