Toro Nagashi Floating Lantern Ceremony Toro (lantern) Nagashi (cruise or float) is an ancient Buddhist ceremony dating back to the 7th century, is traditionally associated with the Oban season in Japan when ancestral spirits are welcomed back to Earth to participate in the festival activities. The Toro Nagashi ceremony is held at the close od the Obon Season when these beloved spirits are led back to their homes ( via the lighted floating paper lanterns) after their brief visit on Earth with their loved ones. The loved one sets the lighted lantern in the water.
