Touring the VMFA! Grace Bland Today I attended a 3 in 30: Posing Beauty tour given by Karen Getty. Karen started off the tour with a bubbly attitude and excitement! She was very kind in pointing out elevators and offering stools as most of the crowd was older and she was happy to accommodate that. This 3 in 30 tour consisted of 3 African- american works in relation to three themes of inner beauty, beauty as business, and beauty with attitude. The first item was House of the Head from the Yoruba culture. (vmfa.museum/collections/art/house-head-ile-ori-shrine/). With this item Getty shared some religious aspects pertaining to the culture and related the object to our own lives and feelings. The second piece was Barber Shop Sign(vmfa.museum/collections/art/barbershop-sign/) which explored beauty as advertisement, in which Getty involved the group to share their opinions and feelings. The last and final piece was Sisters (Susan and Toni),(vmfa.museum/collections/art/sisters-susan-and-toni/), beauty with a sense of power and attitude. Getty combined the interaction from the first and second piece with both historical/cultural background and the groups opinion. Overall Karen Getty lead a wonderful tour and kept the groups attention the whole time. She has a great attitude and used a variety of techniques to keep almost any type of crowd interested. Last chance for the 3 in 30 tour: Posing Beauty is this thursday at 6:30! Make sure to check out each link to see the pieces with extra detail! Wanna know more??? youtube/watch?v=darxeJzn4WI
