Tra Vinh 2015: Update 1: Trivia Night For the Smiling Thank you to everyone who brought friends and family to our trivia night, you all made the night a great success. The night was to raise money for the Smiling Orphanage in Tra Vinh, Vietnam. A special shout out to Jade, Terry, Jaymi, Chandra, Owen and Francois, the brains behind the operation, they organized and managed to put together a great night in such a short time, and during exams! Also a very special thank you to Kevin and all the Haddon’s staff for supplying us with a brilliant venue, great food and drinks. It was a collaborative effort to make this night amazing. We have raised a staggering $2,000. Around 70 people turned up to participate, selling out of raffle tickets. Everyone pitched in to help with the decorations, provided by Terry’s parents, setting up the shelter to protect our guests and welcoming them with a friendly smile. With everyone seated and onto their second beer, round one began. A slow progression through the questions allowed everyone to discus some of the issues about sustainability and think about what they could potentially do to reduce our carbon emissions. Terry’s MC skills kept everyone entertained inside, and a wet Jade, killed it out side, keeping everyone happy. As the night went on the questions ran through a bit faster, igniting the room with loud chatter and laughs as each table rushed to get some answers down. Intermission took us to the halfway point of the night. The atmosphere inside was electric; unfortunately the cold weather and rain out side forced some tables to leave, hopefully not before they got to hear Terry and his sister Karina play for us all. Terry, nailing the guitar and Karina’s amazing voice took over Haddon’s café with all eyes and ears on them. A fantastic way to treat the crowd before the scoring began. Scoring took us to the raffle draw where the lucky winner won movie tickets! Round three saw a quick turn over of questions, finishing off the trivia for the night. Due to a late start, the fourth round was canceled, in its place; the raffle winners were drawn, with one lucky lady winning TWICE! The winners of the trivia were calculated and presented with a choice of gifts. There were other games through the night like; guess how many jelly beans and the best sustainability pun to bring in extra donations. The night ended on a high and already looked like a great success. It was great to see the amount of people who hung around to pack up, I know it had been a long day for everyone, and the help made it easy on everyone involved. The purpose to the trivia night was to highlight the sustainable issues we face in our own country as well as abroad and help the lives of kids in the Smiling Orphanage. We couldn’t thank everyone enough for participating.
