Translated from Ang Talatinigang Tagalog Ng Sariaya, Quezon By Eric J. Dedace It can truly be said that the kind of Tagalog being used in Sariaya and nearby towns in the province of Quezon has its own character. But this can be understood due to the variety of words in the inherent vocabulary that truly give it its characteristic richness. Accordingly, Sariaya Tagalog is apparently richer than the socalled Mother Tagalog language of Bulacan, and it is more “high tech” and efficient because there is no need for the use of more words and phrases to convey the intended message. It has been illustrated through the use of the words “iya”, “a-ah”, “e-eh”, and “i-ih”, and this is even more stressed in the following example of the verb “maghugas”ot to ash, wherein there is a specific word for the thing to be washed as can be seen the table below : *Object to be washed Tagalog Bulacan Tagalog Sariaya *kamay maghugas ng kamay maghinaw *puwit maghugas ng puwit mag – i’wang *sa babae maghugas, mag – wash maghimasa’ *pinggan maghugas ng pinggan magdayag’ *laylayan ng damit o tela hugasan ang laylayan pugusan *kinula hugasan ang kinula anlawan *ngipin magsepilyo magsepilyo, maghiso *baldosa hugasan ang baldosa magbalaas *pasamano ng bintanang kahoy is-isin is-isin, upliin o* kaldero Like in the mother Tagalog language, Sariaya Tagalog has changed likewise and there are a lot of words that are not being used in day-to-day conversation at present. Because of radio, film, local and cable television, the variety of reading materials, the fast pace of travel, the frequency of going to Manila and the eventual residency there because of schooling and jobs, these changes become even more faster with the years, and many of the young people here nowadays have adapted the Manila accent when they talk. Even the elderly have learned to use the colloquial Tagalog of today’s young people, or even showbiz language which is in nowadays. Indeed, changes in a particular language cannot be hindered because it is a normal phase that it has to undergo in order to grow, develop and adapt to the needs of the people who use it. In reality, the very essence and reason for the formation of a language is effective conversation and communication since if it will not change and adapt with the years, it will lose its relevance and will die a natural death.
