Trees expand as they grow (of course). Most trees have fairly elastic bark, but sycamore trees grow too quickly and their bark is too brittle to keep up with this, so the bark falls off in patches. Thats why sycamores have their weird mottled/camouflage colouring. It falls off at a fairly surprising rate: a few hand-sized chunks fall every few minutes (at least for the forty minutes Ive been under this tree). That gorgeous tree in front of University Hall isnt sick. It was just born that way!
