Tropical Storm Halong forms in Pacific, heading toward Japan TORONTO – Another tropical storm has formed in the Pacific Ocean and Japan could feel its effects next week. Though Tropical Storm Halong poses no immediate threat to land, that is likely to change over the next week as it continues to move. Halong is currently west of Guam moving westward at 15 km/h. Maximum sustained winds are 93 km/h with gusts close to 120 km/h. But some strengthening and a turn to the northwest is forecast by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center. By Tuesday, Halong will be southwest of Japan’s Okinawa island as a Category 2 hurricane, or typhoon, as it is commonly known in the Pacific.
