True story time . When we still lived in Indiana we used to make frequent trips to Florida and back . This particular trip occurred in my early teens just after grandpa had passed away and Grandma Alberson , whos name was Duana but I called Grandma Sam , was with us. Now Margie Fern , my mom,did all the drivng with Grandma in the front seat because at her height that was the only way she could see anything . The boys were relegated to the backseat of the Buick Electra , Bryce T sleeping and manning his pipe and me serving as navigator and mannng the maps. My main job was to look for interesting stops along the way , but with an eye always on getting us ensconced in a place for the night where we could dine at a reasonably nice place. For although father, grandma and I would have been fine with a takeout hamburger before bed, Margie Fern decreed otherwise. She explained that working all year long giving service to others in the culinary arts, on her vacation she wanted to enjoy the same in kind. On this particular trip it was on the way back on I65. And it was getting late as the day at Clearwater beach had been too lovely to get an early start. So under some pressure I suggested we stop for the night at a Holiday Inn in Cullman Ala, which boasted of having a sitdown restaurant with linens and such. After disembarking and checking in we rested a bit ,cleaned up and headed for our meal.. Now the place was good at first Iappearance new, clean and decorated with southern style chandeliers. But the meal got off to a rocky start as mom of all people got a soap marked fork. Trying to relieve the tension I made a joke about how at least they washed it , but mom shot me one of her looks. When we got the food everyone was happy except Margie Fern. Seems she had ordered prime rib and was served a different cut.Of all the orders to mess up it had to be hers. We all suggested she at least try it but she had other ideas. And being assured by the waitress that it was indeed their prime rib only made her madder. So that when the manager arrived she let forth a verbal tiradewhich drew grandma to exclaim Marge. Well grandmas intervention seemed to cool her down. Well the upshot of the event was she gotta different cut closer to her original order and we got a free pie to take back to the room. As I was left to pay the manager who was doubling as cashier remarked youre momma sure takes her food seriously dont she? I quickly replied while walking out the door , if you think thats serious you ought to see her at election time.
