Two huge NCAA topics yesterday - well, first, the UW advances to the Elite Eight. But, more importantly, the Northwestern Football team is ruled as school employees, not student athletes, allowing them to unionize. Granted, legally, this has just started, BUT it sets the stage for challenging the NCAAs power. They state student athletes are there purely for the love of the sport and an education. I state the NCAA is totally full of crap! And Northwestern doesnt benefit from the team like other major universities. You can buy your favorite players jersey, with school logo and number, but without the players name. Hmmm, who gets the royalty off of that? Who puts 70,000 fans in the seats for at least $50 a ticket? Why do they recruit players they know will leave early and turn pro? IF the price of student admission was offset by some of that revenue - Im sure they say it is - Id be less skeptical of major college sports. If we didnt have to suffer with coverage of the Weedwhacker Bowl, Id say it wasnt as much about the money. If a bulk of high-profile players werent being paid under the table by alumni - lets face it, the NCAA only catches a portion of the cheaters - I could be swayed a little. Yet a team with less to gain pushes and finally starts the fight. Go Wildcats!
