Two men have been charged over a police pursuit near Goulburn today. About 7:35am (Sunday 23 November 2014), police were contacted after the occupants of a silver hatchback allegedly failed to pay for petrol at a service station on Yass Street, Gunning. A short time later, the car was sighted by police as it travelled north along the Hume Highway in Goulburn. Officers from Goulburn Highway Patrol attempted to stop the vehicle, however, the driver allegedly failed to stop and a pursuit was initiated. During the pursuit the driver conducted a u-turn and travelled south along the highway where police successfully deployed road spikes and stopped the car. The car came to stop in a table drain in the middle of the highway with two men, aged 18 and 20, from Laverton in Victoria, arrested by police. After crashing into the drain a fire broke out underneath the car sparking a grass fire which was unable to be controlled. Fire-fighters attended the scene and extinguished the blaze, however, the car was completely destroyed by the fire. The two men were taken to Goulburn Police Station where the 18-year-old was charged with receive stolen property, dishonestly obtain property by deception, police pursuit-not stop-drive dangerously (Skye’s Law), drive vehicle in a manner dangerous and drive while disqualified. The older man was charged with receiving stolen property and dishonestly obtaining property by deception. Both men were refused bail to appear in Goulburn Local Court tomorrow (Monday 24 November 2014).
