Two robbers jailed 35 years The Koforidua Circuit Court has sentenced two armed robbers to 35 years’ imprisonment for attempting to rob a UK-based businessman at a guest house at Aburi in the Eastern Region. Nelson Amankwah, 26, a phone dealer, and a 38-year-old draughtsman, James Armah, were jailed 18 and 17 years with hard labour, respectively. The two were charged with conspiracy to commit robbery, attempted robbery and causing harm, a charge they both pleaded not guilty to. A State Attorney, Mr Fred Tetteh, who prosecuted, told the court, presided over by Mrs Barbara Charway that the intent of Amankwah and Armah to rob Abraham Barzey, who had returned from the UK in September 2010, was foiled when an accomplice tipped off the police. According to Mr Tetteh, the informant lives at Aburi while Armah resides at Gyankama near Aburi and Amankwah at Kasoa in the Central Region. He said the informant told the police at Aburi of plans by Amankwah and Armah to rob the businessman. According to the prosecutor, the informant said, however, that to succeed there was need for a female accomplice to lure the victim, who they suspected had huge sums of money on him. The police, therefore, had a lady constable feign interest in the game plan of Amankwah and Armah. He said the police woman, together with the informant, Amankwah and Armah went to the guest house which was opposite where Armah lives at Aburi. At the guest house, they knocked on the businessman’s door but he became suspicious when he opened it, and attempted to close it again and lock it from inside. Mr Tetteh said in the process, Armah pushed the door open and attacked the businessman. Armah, he said, threatened to kill the businessman with the knife if he failed to bring out all the money he had on him. A scuffle then ensued and when the businessman attempted to free himself from Armah’s grip, he sustained a deep cut on his left arm. Luckily, the police, who had laid ambush, rushed to the scene and arrested Amankwah and Armah. By Nana Konadu Agyeman / The Mirror / Ghana
