U.S. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., who has been mentioned as a possible presidential candidate, will hold a meeting with the public in Reno Saturday. Paul will hold the meeting at Campo Restaurant, 50 North Sierra St., from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Cost for attendees is $25 while sponsor status is $250. Among his proposals have been cutting $500 billion in federal spending and a plan that would balance the federal budget in five years. Paul is the son of former Texas U.S. Rep. Ron Paul. He is a graduate of Duke Universitys School of Medicine and was a practicing ophthalmologist in Bowling Green, Ky., for 17 years. Paul recently co-sponsored legislation that would remove federal restrictions on the domestic cultivation of industrial hemp, according to his website. The bill would remove hemp as a Class I controlled substance and re-define hemp, which comes from the Cannabis plant, as a non-drug so long as it contained less than 0.3 percent tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Paul is also a proponent of school choice, an issue that is expected to be debated at the Nevada Legislature in 2015. The issue of growing hemp as a commercial product is also expected to be debated when the Legislature opens in Carson City on Feb. 2. Paul has also criticized recently by fellow GOP presidential hopeful, Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., for showing support for President Barack Obamas move to normalize relations with Cuba.
