UGANDAN MOTTO NOT ORIGINAL. While reading French adventure novelist Jules Vernes The Mysterious Island(1874) an indirect sequel to 20000 Legues Under the Sea, i came across a rather disturbing indication to our endemic copy cat nature. Our so-called original national motto For God and My Country is copied. Sad, right? After the four protagonists escape the American Civil War atop a Flying balloon, they sail for five days and crash land on to a cliff face of a rock island isolated in the middle of the South Pacific. As is with most adventure novels, they encounter numerous trials and tribulations but an unknown force always rescues them at the most dair moments. Finally, they discover that the mysterious force is actually Captain Nemo of the Nautilus: an Indian prince who led a failed rebellion against English colonialists and then exiled himself at sea building the mysterious submarine vessel Nautilus. All his crew are dead and he himself is on his last breathes. Captain Nemo finally dies and what are his dying words to Smith----- wait for it------FOR GOD AND COUNTRY. this was in justification of his rebellion and exile over the freedom of his native India. Now since this book was published in 1874, i highly suspect that the drafter of the Ugandan motto simply added the pronoun MY to distinguish his copy from Vernes original thus --- FOR GOD AND MY COUNTRY. I say COPYCATS...... I say SHAME.
