UJ takes stern action against students to ensure well-being of student and staff safety The University of Johannesburg (UJ) has swiftly initiated disciplinary action to deal with 20 students who participated in a demonstration, disrupting administrative and registration activities and committing or enticing violent behaviour, at the University’s Auckland Park Kingsway Campus on Monday, 27 January 2014. Registered students have been suspended pending disciplinary action and/or criminal charges being brought against them; students not yet registered have been charged with criminal behaviour. Approximately 100 students participated in the protest, raising the national concern regarding the shortfall of NSFAS (National Student Financial Scheme) funding to students at Higher Education Institutions such as UJ. The University respects the right of students to protest peacefully, as long as academic and administrative activities are not disrupted and the safety of students and staff is not placed in jeopardy. UJ takes incidents that compromise a safe learning and working environment seriously and will not hesitate to strictly apply its own disciplinary codes to deal with members of the University community suspected of having, or found to have, violated these codes. It has also sought the assistance of the SAPS to maintain order and discipline on its four campuses. The University remains committed to engage with the students on their concerns, but will only do so in an atmosphere of good order and discipline. -Steve
