UN-Righteous Indignation I pray daily that I will not be as the Pharisees. Jesus loved all people but it was apparent the contempt He had for the Pharisees. Matthew 23:16-17 (NIV) Selected; “Woe to you, blind guides! You blind fools! The Pharisees were teachers of the Law. They interpreted the Law of Moses. The problem Jesus had with them was their propensity to interpret the Law and add to it to fit their own selfish ends but they themselves did not feel the need to obey those same Laws. Matthew 23:1-4 (NIV) Selected; Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them. I recently had the privilege of worshiping at National Community Church on Barracks Row in the historic part of Capitol Hill in Southeast DC. The church is located in an old movie theater. Each Sunday morning before the service, there is an outreach ministry for anyone who would like coffee and a donut. Naturally, due to the churchs location, many of those walking by could be described as homeless or at least un-churched. Anyone who stops is offered coffee, a donut and then invited inside to attend the service. There is no distinction as to dress or outward appearance. They are even encouraged to take their coffee and donuts inside with them. All are welcomed to worship together and the regular congregants welcome all without question or judgment. Hebrews 13:2 (NIV); Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it. Think about it...some of those street people, the person at the grocery store or the bank, maybe even someone in your church; could be an angel from God. How do you treat them? How do you judge them? How do you talk about them? I would dare say this church practices the two greatest commandments given by our Lord. Matthew 22:36-40 (NIV); Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law? Jesus replied: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments. Bill Davis Lighthouse Ministries
