UN chief for peaceful end to kashmir clashes July 20, 2013 UN chief for peaceful end to kashmir clashes UNITED NATIONS - UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Friday called for calm and resolution of issues peacefully as the situation in Kashmir took a turn for the worse after security forces shot dead four protesters in the region’s Ramban area. “The Secretary-General has repeatedly called on all concerned to exercise restraint and solve issues peacefully,” his spokesman Martin Nesirky said in response to a question. According to news agency dispatches from Srinagar, apart from the four dead, nearly 20 were reported injured in Gool town of Ramban district during clashes with the men of the Border Security Force (BSF) on Friday morning. The protests later spread to the 300-kilometre-long Jammu-Srinagar National Highway after which the highway was closed, the reports said. The violence Friday morning erupted in Gool town, around 145 kilometres from Srinagar at a BSF station where a group of people had gathered to protest against the alleged manhandling of a religious leader by the BSF men on Wednesday evening.
