UNC Women’s Arm backs Kamla Saturday, February 1 2014 The Women’s Arm of the United National Congress (UNC) has unanimously agreed to throw its support behind current UNC political leader, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, in “any upcoming election that the National Executive of the UNC may have in the future.” A resolution expressing the women’s arm support was tabled at a meeting on Wednesday at the Preysal Community Centre. A motion, in the name of UNC Sangre Grande activist Cherry Ann Rajkumar, read that resolving “to express its fullest support to the Hononourable Kamla Persad-Bissessar as both Prime Minister and Political Leader of the UNC to continue to lead the country and our beloved party”. The motion further resolved to “write to the National Executive of the UNC to pledge this support in any internal election called by the Executive”. The motion was seconded by Nadine Romanie of the Diego Martin North East constituency and unanimously passed by the large gathering of women who had attended the meeting. Speaking afterwards, Women’s Arm chairman and Oropouche West MP Stacy Roopnarine said she supported the motion as she believed Persad-Bissessar had “brought a new dimension to the party” and that due to her leadership, the party had been able to become a part of the coalition People’s Partnership Government. She called on the women to continue to unite as they worked to strengthen the party and all its arms. Also present were acting UNC chairman Khadija Ameen and deputy political leader, Marlene Coudray.
