UNCERTAINTY OF DE-HORNING RHINOS : The document deals primarily with Black Rhinos. Being solitary by nature they need to be tough - and ornery critters! White Rhino in stark contrast, are more sociable animals. Their circumstances are different - yet similar! Quote : Numerous hypotheses exist for why juvenile mortality was restricted to areas where dehorned rhinos and spotted hyenas overlapped. We have already addressed four possibilities-predation, maternal age, year of de- horning, and nutritional stress (Berger and Cunningham 1994a). Close Quote. bergerlab.dbs.umt.edu/images/stories/46.pdf Thats one very complicated document - anyway I did manage to make sense of something, where there seem to be questions regarding why juvenile deaths occurred in areas overlapping hyaena populations : My interpretation is simply one based upon common sense - that the de-horned mothers couldnt adequately (if at all) defend either themselves, or the calves. Since they could no longer cope with clans, and deal out sufficient pain via head & horn (scoop up, and chuck hyaenas around) the hyaenas simply felt no pain - so ganged up on them, separated them from each other - simply killing off, and eating these juveniles. Why blind this all with science, as were doing often these days! HORN TREATMENT : ( Rhino horn devaluation technique ) : Horn treatment, is in my opinion a more complete, and ethical package; preserving the visual tourism aspects, keeping horns intact, for that, and also from the perspective of courtship, and inter-animal relations, fights, protection etc. Discourages poaching in numbers of ways, and prevents the horn from entering the so-called market place - thereby reducing immediate, and future demand ! This can only be done through deterrents, and destruction, and spoiling of of the product - and the spoiling doesnt have to be 100% efficient, as the pro-traders would have us all believe! It just has to be efficient enough as to make poaching pointless, costly, & time consuming!
