UNESCO inviting Nominations for UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize 2014 UNESCO is inviting nominations for UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize from the governments of Member States, in consultation with their National Commissions, as well as international and regional professional and non-governmental organizations active in the fields of journalism and freedom of expression. The major objective of the prize is to reward a person, organization or institution that has made a notable contribution to the defense and/or promotion of press freedom anywhere in the world, especially if risks have been involved. The winner of is awarded $25,000 in a ceremony on May 3, the World Press Freedom Day 2014. The prize also consists of a certificate and an object symbolizing the award. Eligibility Criteria: -Only a UNESCO Member State, international or regional professional organization and non-governmental organization working in the field of journalism and freedom of expression is eligible to nominate candidate. -Nomination must be accompanied with a written recommendation about the nominee’s background, achievements, and contribution. -Candidates shall have made a significant contribution to press freedom anywhere in the world. -The nominee’s contribution to defense and/or promotion of freedom of the press over the years must be highlighted. -Self-nomination is not considered eligible for the award.
