Fellows will receive a monthly stipend of USD 3,000. Fellows will be provided with a return air ticket between his/her country of residence and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. 3. Fellows cannot be employed on ECA or United Nations regular positions within six months of completion of a fellowship period. 4. Fellows will work on a predefined project, designed to contribute to specific aspects of the work programme of the receiving section, the African Centre for Gender (ACG). Terms of Reference for each fellowship assignment will be designed to guide the recruitment process. GENERAL INFORMATION ECA is the regional arm of the United Nations in Africa. Its mandate is to promote the social and economic development of Africa. ECAs dual role as a regional arm of the UN, and a part of the regional institutional landscape in Africa, positions it well to make unique contributions to member States efforts to address their development challenges. Its strength derives from its role as the only UN agency mandated to operate at the regional and sub-regional levels to harness resources and bring them to bear on Africas priorities. ECA is inviting applications from qualified young African Professionals in the area of natural resource management. Qualified women are particularly encouraged to apply. Candidates applying for the position must be below 36 years of age at the time of the application. Candidates currently enrolled in a Ph.D. programme or with an admission are also welcome to apply. Fellowship within ECA aims to provide practical, on-the-job experience to the professionals as they build and develop their professional career at African development institutions, teaching and research think tanks or member States’ government institutions. Fellows will also become familiar with the Commissions broad programmes and services to member States and sub-regional bodies in addressing natural resource management priorities in Africa. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - 2 - Under the overall direction of the Coordinator, and the direct supervision of the Chief of the Centre, the incumbent will be responsible for the following tasks: · Contribute to the centre’s work programme, by carrying out research on the Gender and Mining project as well as the Beijing+20 review process especially as it relates to women and environment; women and the economy; women and poverty; and women in power and decision-making critical areas of focus; · Support the work of the centre in reviewing secondary literature on policy and structural changes that support upgrading of artisanal mining as well productive collaboration between large-scale mining corporations and small-scale mining operations as part of the gender and mining project; · Contribute to the review and analysis of national reports on Beijing +20 for the compilation of the regional synthesis report; · Contribute to the production of technical and policy reports, briefing notes, and support in the organization and servicing of expert group meetings, workshops, and seminars; · Provide support to intergovernmental processes dealing with gender equality and women’s empowerment within the natural resource management domain such as the Beijing +20 review process by preparing summary reports and minutes of meetings; · Any other research duties assigned by the supervisor to ensure delivery of ACG programme work COMPETENCIES Professionalism: Sound knowledge of the nexus between natural resource management, gender and women’s rights issues, especially in the Africa context; In-depth knowledge of current continental and global discourse, including discussions linked to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Post-2015 development framework, the African Development Goals (ADGs) and the 20-year review of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action; Ability to conceptualize, analyze and evaluate critical matters pertaining to gender equality and women’s empowerment within the natural resources management arena; Ability to collect, and analyze information and disseminate it effectively; Ability to develop proposals to accelerate efforts to achieve inclusive social development, and gender equality through harnessing the rich human and natural resource capital in member States; Ability to contribute to the production of the Beijing+20 regional review report, the gender and mining compendium and related research work Planning and Organizing: Develops clear goals that are consistent with agreed strategies; identifies priority activities and assignments; adjusts priorities as required; allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work; foresees risks and allows for contingencies when planning; monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary; uses time efficiently; proven ability to plan and organize work, particularly in organizing research and report writing. Communication: Good writing, oral and presentation skills, including the ability to explain technical issues to a wide-range of stakeholders. Good drafting skills in English are required. Teamwork: Demonstrates ability to work in a multicultural, multi-ethnic environment and to maintain effective working relations with people of different national and cultural backgrounds giving due respect to diversity. QUALIFICATIONS Education Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in environmental sciences, natural resource management, gender and development or any related social science, is required. A Ph.D. would be an advantage. Work Experience Proven research experience in the field of natural resource management, particularly as it relates to gender - 3 - and development, economic empowerment of women, either in the academia, the private/ public sector, or with civil society organizations. Language English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For this post, fluency in oral and written English or French is required.
