UNZASU CONDEMNS CALLS FOR MPs SALARY INCREMENT. The University of Zambia Students Union (UNZASU) says it is shameful to hear parliamentarians calling for salary increments. The students union says it has noted with dismay the developments in parliament saying parliamentarians are custodians of the general citizenry hence serving the interests of the majority should be their priority. UNZASU publicity and information secretary kamona lindunda says citizens expect parliamentarians to show hard work towards solving pressing challenges the country is facing before they could think of their pay rise. Lindunda has since challenged parliamentarians to work the nation’s deteriorating economy where the food basket and the cost of living in general have drastically increased. Meanwhile UNZASU Academic Affairs Secretary Chinyama Simasiku has said parliamentarians should reflect on the affairs of the country and students at the University of Zambia before theirs. Chinyama has since assured the student populace that as a new executive they are in a hurry to establish better means and ways on how to engage government on how best to address the issue concerning students allowance increase. Currently, the University of Zambia Students’ allowances stand at k22.50 per day since the last pay rise in early 2011. He has further advised the students to continue remaining calm and wait for a communiqué over the matter soon. In the mean time, UNZASU Secretary General Tembo Sangulukani has stressed concerns on the current growing speculations over the state president’s health. He says just like there is no harm in students demanding for the way about of their unzasu leaders, Tembo believes that there is equally absolutely no harm for the public to seek audience about their duly elected president. Tembo has urged the necessary authority to consider information and communication as a crucial resource. He has since called upon the relevant authority to come out in the open and clear the speculations. BELOW IS THE FULL STATEMENT ISSUED BY UNZASU TO UNZA RADIO PAY RISE FOR PARLIAMENTARIANS NOT NECESSARY FOR NOW - UNZASU As the University of Zambia Students union (unzasu) through the office of the Publicity Secretary Miss Kamona Lindunda, our serious position on this matter is that, it is shameful to hear such speculations flowing from the August house where laws are amended. Parliamentarians are custodians of the general citizenry, hence serving the interests of the majority should be their priority. We expect parliamentarians to show hard work towards solving pressing challenges the country is currently facing before they could think of their pay rise. We hence challenge them to work on our nation’s deteriorating economy where the food basket and the cost of living in general have drastically seen the helm of Mount Kilimanjaro. However, we have not heard any communiqué and the underlying factors over the issue. Hence we wouldn’t want to immediately condemn them (parliamentarians). We acknowledge their plea but it is totally not necessary and a priority as at now. Meanwhile Mr. Chinyama Simasiku Jack, UNZASU Academic Affairs Secretary, has charged that, while they (parliamentarians) are calling for better conditions of service regardless of their seemingly stable wages of k28, 000.00 basic salary and k6, 000.00 sitting allowance per week respectively, the majority of Zambians are deep below salaries of k6, 000.00 per month. The University of Zambia Students on the other hand are still struggling for sustenance with a k22.50 per day since their last pay rise in early 2011. As things stand, a reasonable meal on campus is costing roughly k15.00. Hence generally speaking, students are currently in a more pressing situation. Mr. Chinyama has since assured the student populace that as a new executive; we are in a hurry to establish better means and ways on how to engage our able government on how best to address the issue concerning students allowance increase. He has further advised the students to continue remaining calm and wait for a communiqué over the matter soon. We acknowledge the efforts of our predecessors, and we are aware healthy negotiations are already underway over the matter. In the mean time, UNZASU Secretary General Mr. Tembo Sangulukani has stressed concerns on the current growing speculations over the state president’s health; just like there is no harm in students demanding for the way about of their unzasu leaders, He (Mr Tembo) believes that there is equally absolutely no harm for the public to seek audience about their duly elected president. Mr. Tembo has since urged the necessary authority to consider information and communication as a crucial resource. Hence, he has called upon the relevant authority to come out in the open and clear the speculations. By Kamona Lindunda (Miss) UNZASU Publicity Secretary
