UPND-a focused political party with a vision is not opposed to teaching local languages as a subject in schools, but is totally opposed to the use of local languages as a medium of instruction in schools. We need to be serious in the way we handle policy issues in our country...you dont just wake up from a dream and impose policies on the people that are archaic and do not sync with modern global trends and evolution. From our findings, its very clear that the PF is not even ready in terms of provision of materials in local languages and even worse not ready in the training of teachers which is vital if this policy is to succeed.Furthermore as upnd we strongly believe that it is a violation of civil liberties to force children to learn languages that are not their native languages.Aready we have a conflict were the Lambas on the copperbelt are refusing to learn in Bemba and the Luvale pupils in zambezi have refused to learn in Lunda. What the pf government should understand is that the world as we know it today is a global community offering global opportunities. This being the scenario means that a good command of the english language is an added advantage. If our pupils will only start learning English in grade V as the PF policy suggests, then our pupils will lose their global competitive edge.A good example is in Tanzania where a similar policy of the PF is applied. With all this said and done,it clearly shows how visionless and unfocused this government is on many policy matters of this nation and as upnd we refuse to seat back and watch the pf destroy our beloved zambia.
