UPND vice-president for politics Dr Canisius Banda update; During the meeting with ECZ, Dr Banda said all the statements he made were aimed at alerting the electoral body to take remedial action. “We never at any time criticised or accuse the ECZ of intending to rig elections. In all the statements that I made, we expressly stated our concerns and called upon the ECZ to listen to us, investigate and eventually assure the nation that this process is truly a genuine and democratic one and not a sham,” he said. “It is worth noting that these plans, in their genesis and execution, could have been mooted without the official knowledge and sanction of the ECZ.”: UPND vice-president for political affairs Dr Canisius Banda on Monday maintained that his party did not accuse the Electoral Commission of Zambia of intending to rig next week’s presidential election. The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) on Monday summoned Dr Banda over the rigging allegations he made during a UPND press briefing two weeks ago. During the meeting with ECZ, Dr Banda said all the statements he made were aimed at alerting the electoral body to take remedial action. “We never at any time criticised or accuse the ECZ of intending to rig elections. In all the statements that I made, we expressly stated our concerns and called upon the ECZ to listen to us, investigate and eventually assure the nation that this process is truly a genuine and democratic one and not a sham,” he said. “It is worth noting that these plans, in their genesis and execution, could have been mooted without the official knowledge and sanction of the ECZ.” Dr Banda said his party held the ECZ in very high esteem but could, however, not say the same about all their members of staff. And ECZ public relations manager Cris Akufuna said more interactions and explanations with political parties would help minimise suspicions “I would like to confirm that we met Dr Banda and looked at the issues he raised. We explained the processes involving results transmission, ballot paper distribution. The purpose was to make him understand the processes and assure him of the commission’s commitment to deliver credible elections. We said our doors are open as a commission and all that the UPND needs to do is to keep communicating and consulting with the commission,” he said. Meanwhile, Akufuna said the ECZ would have a meeting with all political parties this Friday to explain how the results management system would be done for next week’s election. - See more at: postzambia/news.php?id=5386#sthash.OlCwOSXA.dpuf
