URA SEALS OFF FIRMS OVER TAX ARREARS. ( URA Seals. ) Three business firms around Kampala have been sealed off today for failure to honour their unpaid tax liabilities. Maimuna Nanfuka entreprises also trading under a new name, Soft Chain Distributors at William Street was sealed off for failure to pay up Value Added Tax (VAT) arrears amounting to Ugx 248million. The firm filed a case in the Commercial Court challenging URA’s tax assessment and the case was dismissed in September 2014. At this point, the firm changed its name to another unregistered name but remained operating at the same premises. Sharp Electronics located in Kamwokya, also a Kampala suburb faced a similar enforcement action for failure to honour the earlier six payment installments of the total tax liability of Ugx 342m in VAT and Corporation tax. URA had also received information about the company’s intention to wind up which prompted a faster action. URA also effected enforcement action on Fuelex stations found in Nalukolongo and Lweza sealing off their premises and attaching some of their fuel tankers. Fuelex has an outstanding tax liability of Ugx 70million in Value Added Tax. “We have also attached their fuel tankers. We have over and again engaged the proprietor but he has remained defiant,” Abudu Salaam Waiswa, the manager Debt Collection, URA said of the action taken against Fuelex stations. According to him, several earlier efforts were made to ensure payment of the arrears after tax audits established the companies’ indebtedness to government but all these yielded no results. Addressing the press this afternoon, Waiswa used the opportunity to appeal to all owners of the firms closed today to immediately pay up their outstanding tax arrears or face the next wrath of the taxman which would include auctioning of the items attached to recover the revenue. “We call upon directors to act fast and pay up. We also ask other taxpayers not to allow us get to this level of action,” Waiswa added. - Allan Ssempebwa Kyobe, Public and Corporate Affairs Division.
