September 24, 2013 Update: Yesterday, Senator Ted Cruz asked for unanimous consent to immediately consider the House-passed Continuing Resolution (CR) without any amendments. As a reminder, this CR funds the government, takes steps to avoid a default on government debt in light of the looming debt ceiling, and defunds ObamaCare. Senator Reid denied this request. Senator Cruz then asked for unanimous consent that any amendments to the House CR (like one that would strip the defunding) require 60 votes. Reid denied this request as well. Although this means that Harry Reid only has a 51-vote threshold later this week to pass the CR the way that he wants it, he must first get 60 YES votes on cloture – the vote that ends debate so that the Senate can vote on the bill. We know that Harry Reid will strip the defunding language from the bill after the cloture vote, so let us be clear: A YES vote on cloture is a vote to pass the CR as Harry Reid wants it. Tell your Senators to VOTE NO ON CLOTURE. If at least 41 of the 46 Republican Senators vote NO on cloture, Harry Reid will lose this fight!
