Uganda to become east Africa’s first world by 2065. Vision: President Museveni said Uganda would be east Africa’s first world in 50 years time from now while Kenya fights to develop its infrastructures and economy to meet those of developed countries by 2030. President Museveni said last year during the country’s 50 years marking of independence in Kololo ground that Uganda will be like the developed countries a head of five decades. The government has rolled out several national programs intended to improve citizens’ standard of living and preparing the future for brighter economy and welfare. National program like BonnaBagagawale (literally meaning all should become rich) campaign was launched in 2002 followed by NAADS an agricultural campaign to commercialize and diversify agriculture. Last year a number of exotic Mangoes Oranges and Guavas seeds were distributed to farmers willing to venture into fruits farming. The campaign proved tangible following the official opening of fruit factory in Busoga region earlier 2013. The country also invested heavily on vocational trainings to prepare young people with enough skills in the private sector. In Uganda even prisoners are enrolled in tailoring, carpentry, building, hotel management and catering and counseling. Dr Johnson Byabashaija, Uganda’s commissioner General of prisons service said there rehabilitation campaign is to prepare young people to be self sustaining when out of prison. African journal of criminology and justice ranked Uganda the best in Africa with best prisons rehabilitation program or campaign in Africa and the fourth globally. This was done through the re-offender rate. Netherlands tops the world as the place with least criminals and plans to shut down its detention centers because there are no criminals there currently. Switzerland ranks the second with recidivism of 22% followed by Norway 30% and lastly Uganda with 32%. The report revealed that in Uganda, out of every 100 inmates released, only 32 would be back in prison within a year. In Africa, Uganda is followed by Zambia 33%, Rwanda 36% and Kenya and Tanzania at 47% respectively. They also ranked United States of America the country with the worst crime record in the world with recidivism of 90% followed by South Africa, Germany and Asia tying at 74%. Recidivism refers to the number of times the same person is jailed in a year. Meanwhile, Kenya east Africa’s largest economy says her vision is to have improved modern infrastructures by 2030. City roads and roundabouts as well as building should meet those of first world countries. Kenya took over the economy lead from Tanzania after embarking on improving her private sector empowerment leaving Uganda at the third position.
